MUC Connect featuring Judson Finley

Judson Finley will be sharing insights from the Leo C. Thorne Collection with his presentation “Placing the Uinta Basin in Southwest Archaeology.” The Leo C. Thorne Collection is among the most unique assemblages of Native American archaeological objects that has been a centerpiece of Vernal culture for nearly a century. Understanding where the artifacts originated from now requires returning to the early years of settlement in the Vernal area, which is possible through a rich archive of photographs, field notes, correspondence, and other sources held in the Uintah County Regional History Center. Join us as we discuss ongoing studies of the Thorne Collection and what it reveals about Native American life in the Basin more than a 1,000 years ago.

Judson Finley is Professor of Anthropology and Head of the School of Social Sciences at Utah State University in Logan, Utah. He is a Wyoming native with deep family ties to northern Utah and western Colorado. Judson’s research explores the intersection of geology, environmental change, and Native American history in the Intermountain West.

Thelma “Pat” Nixon was born on this day in 1912. She served as First Lady of the United States from 1969 to 1974 as the wife of the 37th president, Richard Nixon. Pat became the first first lady to earn a graduate degree, putting herself through college doing odd jobs. Her main platform as first lady was volunteerism. She and her staff members read through countless newspapers across the country, submitting letters of praise to people who volunteered in their communities. Come see us at the Gun and Knife show at the Uintah Conference Center again today! Abigail Powers Fillmore was born on this day in 1798. She was the wife of Millard Fillmore and served as first lady from 1850 to 1853. Abigail was a teacher from age 16 and became the first first lady to hold a job after marriage. She was more recognizable to the public than ladies before her due to advancing visual technology. She loved physical activity, and at one point broke an ankle. It never healed properly and she was left unable to perform her duties as first lady. She turned most of her responsibilities on to her daughter, Abbie. Come see us at the Gun & Knife Show at the Uintah Conference Center today and tomorrow! Jane Appleton Pierce was born on this day in 1806. She was the wife and first lady of the 14th president, Franklin Pierce, from 1853 to 1857. She disliked living in Washington D.C. and was unhappy that her husband won the presidency. Two months before his inauguration, they were in a train accident where their only living child passed away. Jane was so desperate to communicate with her late son, she held a séance at the White House. She closed herself off for two years, before emerging to fulfill her hostess duties. Although she didn’t care for politics, she supported the abolitionist movement. At a time when female employment was severely restricted, the telecommunication industry was a vital source of professional opportunities for women. Telephone companies gave women opportunities to also work in management. One example is Essie Neal and the Uintah Telephone. March is Women's History Month!
