MUC Connect: Handcrafted History featuring Alycia Luke

The First Ladies of the White House Doll Collection, crafted for the Bicentennial of the United States, is remarkable. Join us for this special presentation about how this collection came to be, and why it is still relevant today.
Alycia Luke is the Exhibit Curator at the Museum of Uintah County. She is from Heber City and loves living in the Basin, where her great-grandparents settled, and her grandparents grew up. Alycia loves learning about the rich history of the Basin and making pieces of history accessible through the exhibits she curates.

MUC Connect: Lagoon featuring Gabriella Salazar

A summertime classic, Lagoon Amusement Park has existed in some iteration since 1886, making it the oldest park West of the Mississippi! Come learn more about the interesting history of the park and the rides that make it so iconic.
Gabriella Salazar is an archaeologist and roller coaster enthusiast based in Vernal, UT. Originally hailing from Sioux Falls, SD, Gabriella got her degree in Anthropology in 2022 and has continued to move west to pursue her interests in archaeology. Outside of her job in the Uinta Basin, you can catch her camping throughout the intermountain west, probably looking for insects.

We have some broken things in our collection that you don't get to see on display often. One object we currently have on display is this composition doll. These dolls were marketed as "unbreakable" and were much more affordable than the more fragile porcelain dolls. Composition dolls were phased out after hard plastic dolls, which were even more affordable and truly unbreakable. What's your favorite ride at Lagoon? This painting is by artist Trista Merrell was inspired by Claude Monet's "San Giorgio Maggiore by Twilight." Come see all of the wonderful artwork in this show before it's gone! This piece by Lori D. Burchinal and was inspired by Friedrich August Moritz Retzsch's painting "Checkmate. Come see this piece in person during @uintahbasinvisualarts Old Master's Challenge! We are creating an exhibit that is about using your voice. One local history story we are planning to include is about the 2018 Roosevelt Junior High School Dress Code Protest. Don't miss out on Uintah Basin Visual Arts Old Master's Challenge! It will only be up until the end of this month. This painting is by artist Marlee Merrell and was inspired by Claude Monet's Water Lilies. Mary “Betty” Bliss Dandridge was born on this day in 1824. She was the youngest daughter of President Zachary Taylor, and served as first lady from 1849 to 1850. She was raised in frontier forts while her father, an army general, conducted the Black Hawk War (1832) and the Second Seminole War (1835 – 1842). Upon Taylor’s election to presidency, her mother declined to fill the role of first lady, so Mary took over the household and hostess duties.
