MUC Connect is a speaker series started by the Museum of Uintah County in partnership with local archaeologists. MUC Connect occurs on the third Thursday of each month, and some months we will have extra!

MUC Connect: Handcrafted History

First Ladies of the White House Doll Collection

April 16 at 6:00PM

Handcrafted History will feature speaker Alycia Luke, who is the Exhibit Curator at the Museum of Uintah County. She is from Heber City and loves living in the Basin, where her great-grandparents settled, and her grandparents grew up. Alycia loves learning about the rich history of the Basin and making pieces of history accessible through the exhibits she curates.
The First Ladies of the White House Doll Collection, crafted for the Bicentennial of the United States, is remarkable. Join us for a special presentation about how this collection came to be and why it is still relevant today.

Floral Hoop Decoration

Join us for a fun night of crafting while we discuss mental well-being and make meaningful social connections! We will be creating beautiful floral hoop decorations. Crafting Change is free to attend, and all materials are provided. Due to limited space, registration is recommended.

MUC Connect:
Lagoon

History and Preservation of the Park

April 23 at 6:00PM

A summertime classic, Lagoon Amusement Park has existed in some iteration since 1886, making it the oldest park West of the Mississippi! Come learn more about the interesting history of the park and the rides that make it so iconic.
Gabriella Salazar is an archaeologist and roller coaster enthusiast based in Vernal, UT. Originally hailing from Sioux Falls, SD, Gabriella got her degree in Anthropology in 2022 and has continued to move west to pursue her interests in archaeology. Outside of her job in the Uinta Basin, you can catch her camping throughout the intermountain west, probably looking for insects.

Elizabeth "Betty" Ford was born on this day in 1918. Betty Ford was the wife of 38th president Gerald A. Ford, and served as the first lady from 1974 until 1977. As first lady, Betty was an advocate for women's rights, and also chose to speak publicly about her breast mastectomy. This helped many women fighting the same battle feel seen. Some new titles have been added to our America250 section of the gift shop! These new titles include "Our Flag Was Still There: The True Story of Mary Pickersgill and the Star-Spangled Banner" by Jessie Hartland and "Happy Semiquincentennial, America!: 250 Reasons Why America Is Still Worth Celebrating" by Jay Payleitner. "Hello, America" and "Hello, Fourth of July" by Martha Day Zschock are also still available for purchase. Happy Easter! Did you know that after Congress passed a law forbidding the Easter egg roll on Capitol grounds, Lucy Webb Hayes and 19th president Rutherford B. Hayes invited the children to hold the event on the White House lawn instead? This was the beginning of the White House Easter Egg Roll tradition we still see today! Mary McKee was born on this day in 1858. She was the daughter of the 23rd president, Benjamin Harrison. Mary McKee took over the duties of first lady after her mother's passing. Our First Ladies of the White House Doll Collection book features this quote from her: “It has been my good fortune to go through life in the rays of reflected glory, but in an assembly where all titles to distinction are derived from the deeds of others, surely I have a claim to speak.” We are compiling a community recipe collection in celebration of America's Potluck on July 5th. Everyone is encouraged to spend time with their neighbors, friends, and families on that day! We invite you to share your recipes and reminiscences to be featured in this special collection. It will be available digitally before the celebration. We now carry notebooks! We have a large variety of designs and sizes, so come in and check them out! Come check out this fun piece by Necia Collotzi! It is a Peanuts Rendition of Norman Rockwell's Freedom from Want/Thanksgiving Picture. Like many of the pieces from the Uintah Basin Visual Arts Old Master's Challenge, you need to come see this one in person! The Old Master's Challenge will be up until April 30th, hope you can make it in to see all the beautiful artwork this year! Lou Henry Hoover was born on this day in 1874. She was a very active woman who enjoyed playing sports, being outdoors, and had a love of learning. After attending a lecture on geology at Stanford University, she decided to enroll. Not only was she the only woman in her class, but she was also the first woman to graduate with a geology degree from Stanford. As first lady, she was passionate about hunger relief and accessible education. As a history lover, she undertook a project to catalog and preserve White House furnishings. Lou became the first first lady to communicate on the radio. The next MUC Connect will be on April 16th at 6:00 PM.
